US Representative Meeks submits bill on anti-Russian sanctions

WASHINGTON, Jan 24 (PRIME) -- Gregory Meeks, chairman of the foreign affairs committee of the U.S. House of Representatives, has submitted a bill on the anti-Russian sanctions without waiting for a vote of the U.S. Senate on a similar bill, the committee said in a statement late on January 21.

The bill includes punishing sanctions that would be imposed on Russia in case of a military intervention into Ukraine, including restrictions against the Nord Stream 2 natural gas pipeline, Russia’s producing industry, at least three banks, the country’s debt, President Vladimir Putin, and several other top officials.

Meeks suggests that the bill should be introduced simultaneously with the initiative submitted earlier to the Senate by Senator Bob Menendez.

Moscow has repeatedly rejected all allegations of the West and Ukraine about its allegedly aggressive actions, saying that it doesn’t threat anyone and doesn’t want to attack anyone. Russia believes that the West uses the statements on possible Russian aggression as justification for placing NATO military personnel and weapons close to the Russian border.
